Vail Ski Resort: Vail reigns as the largest ski resort in the United States, with more than 5,200 acres of powdered terrain. The Colorado resort boasts 193 trails and 33 lifts, as well as a beautiful setting west of Denver.
Winter Park Ski Resort: Accessibility is a priority at Winter Park. It's the closest ski resort to Denver International Airport, with just a 90-minute drive between plane and terrain. It's also a draw for disabled skiers, with plenty of special programs available.
Diamond Peak Ski Resort: On the north end of Lake Tahoe lies Diamond Peak Ski Resort. The uncrowded mountain offers easy runs for beginners, and its Child Ski Center -- entering its third decade -- is a great place to introduce young ones to the sport. Taos Ski Resort: Arid Taos boasts plenty of the champagne powder that typifies New Mexico's short, stunning winters. Visitors can choose from four ski resorts, including Taos Ski Valley, one of the last parks in North America to enforce a snowboard ban.
Park City Ski Resort: Park City Mountain Resort boasts an average 355 inches of dry Utah powder annually. Skiers will find 3,300 acres of terrain spread over seven peaks and nine bowls. Snowboarders can try out the superpipe used in the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Snowbird Ski Resort: In the heart of the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, Snowbird averages about 500 inches of low-density Utah powder each year. Terrain is divided in such a way that roughly a third each is reserved for beginners, intermediates and experts.
Solitude Ski Resort: This low-key alpine retreat in Utah's Wasatch Mountains features a European-style pedestrian village, more than 500 inches of annual snowfall and terrain for all levels of skiers and riders. It is a favorite among families.
The Canyons Ski Resort: The Canyons is the closest Park City mountain resort to Salt Lake City's airport. It has eight mountains, 3,700 acres of diverse terrain and 152 trails.
Jackson Hole Ski Resort: Jackson Hole Mountain Resort appeals to experienced skiers, with 50 percent of the runs reserved for experts. It is in northwest Wyoming, just south of stunning Grand Teton National Park and not far from Yellowstone National Park.
